If my research is correct the addressee of this envelope above, I believe to be, The Hon. Edward O’Neill MP. Edward was born on 31st December, 1839 and was an Irish Peer and a Conservative MP… Edward was also known by the name Edward Chichester until 1855, a name his father the Reverend William Chichester himself used until his inheritance of the O'Neill legacy. The family home named 'Shanes Castle' in 1722, dated from 1345 when it was known as Eden-Duff- Carrick. The castle was destroyed by fire in 1816 and the family moved into the stables. The home replacing this was a larger Victorian-Gothic property but also met the grim fate of fire in 1922. Back to Edward and he married Lady Louisa the daughter of the 11th Earl and Countess of Dundonald. They went on to have six children. Edward was elected to the House of Commons for County Antrim in 1863 and he held the seat until 1880. After this time Edward succeeded his father, in the Barony, and entered the House of Lords. Lord O'Neill's grandson became Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. Edward died in 1928 and Lady O'Neill died in 1942. The 4th Lord O'Neill the current keeper, and stepson of Ian Fleming the James Bond creator, is a keen conservationist, so much of the old estate is now a nature reserve. The ruins of the O'Neills 'Shanes Castle' is extensively used for filming by HBO TV 's Game of Thrones. As to the Belgrave Square address I have yet to find much information but presume it was a Government building at the time as many of the property’s were. It is at present home to the Embassy of Brunei.☺
